Barb Food Mart strives to reduce food insecurity and increase nutrition education

Teachers district-wide have long recognized the changing economic needs of the students they see each day in their classrooms.  They have provided many a child with lunch and/or breakfast form their own wallets.  Lunch supervisors have seen too many kids go without, some more than a day or two. To address this growing need of those who are food insecure, Barb Food Mart opened in June of 2013 in DeKalb School District #428. At that time, 50% of the students received free and/or reduced lunch assistance.  Today that number is 55%.  Many of our families have to make hard choices such as to purchase food or pay the utilities.

Currently, BFM serves 80-100 families each Thursday. We provide family-friendly meals, meat, fresh produce and gallons of 1% milk.We strive to provide an atmosphere of respect and dignity as moms shop each week.
