How can you help District #428 Families?
There are a number of ways to help!
One way is to raise awareness about food insecurity in DeKalb County. Hunger and food insecurity is often hidden in plain sight. Many may not realize that not only are 13.9% of DeKalb County residents food insecure, but 1 in 5 children in DeKalb County are unsure where their next meal will come from. It is nearly impossible to fill a need when we don't realize there is one, so let's talk about hunger in DeKalb County!
If you'd like to learn more about food insecurity in our county, and our nation, please visit Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap page.
Some other ways to help Barb Food Mart fight hunger in DeKalb County is by volunteering your time and/or by donating food or funds so we can continue to increase nutrition and food security to our neighbors.
We always need kind and full hearts to help us stock our shelves and greet our families!
If you'd like to volunteer with us, you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit SignUpGenius. Use the email email@example.com to find us.
We normally have two shifts each Thursday.
9:30 am-10:30 am - Assist with unloading the delivery, stocking shelves and prepare the space for the families to shop. (Volunteers during this shift must be 8 years old and older)
4:30pm-6:00pm - Assist families with shopping. (Volunteers must be over 18 years old)
Currently we see 80-100 families each week. Making sure we can provide each and every one of them nutritious food takes time, man power and money. Luckily we are a partner of Northern Illinois Food Bank. Through the Food Bank's buying power we are able to obtain food at an amazing rate. At a retail grocery store $10 buys 2-3 boxes of cereal. Through our partnership, Barb Food Mart can purchase the equivalent of an entire grocery cart full of food from the Food Bank for that same $10!
